Avenues Street Fair - Salt Lake City 2008
Just like the Norway Sidewalk Art Festival, it was a beautiful summer day, but this time, the venue was the annual Avenues Street Fair. The Avenues is one of the oldest established neighborhoods of Salt Lake City. Each year, the Greater Avenues Coummunity Council selects a different portion of the Avenues Area to highlight local artists, musicians, restaurants and non-profit organizations. There were over 200 booths and 10,000+ visitors. This is the first year the Golden Rule Project participated in the fair. We were able to familiarize many visitors with our project and distributed free golden rule posters in both the English and Spanish languages. Our thanks to Sharon Rose and Julie Lehr for their assistance.

Norway Sidewalk Art Festival 2008
It was a gorgeous summer day in Maine and smiling faces abounded. Over 100 artists, more than 100 performers, 50 volunteers, two coordinators, numerous community, civic and nonprofits groups and approximately 5,000 people combined July 12 to produce what is now being hailed as the best Norway arts Festival and the Golden Rule Project tent was there.

During the course of the day, hundreds of curious people stopped by to view the attractive broadsides on display and learn about the project. Local artists, Pat Chandler of Norway, Maine and Cynthia Pfender, also an art teacher, of Conway, NH, beautifully illuminated the broadsides.

Among the many visitors were numerous teachers (of both public and private schools), parents, Sunday school teachers, Boy Scout and Girl Scout leaders, grandparents, and community officials. Many expressed an appreciation of the project in its inclusive, non-denominational and broad reaching capacity and application in an effort to bring a much-needed atmosphere of tolerance and harmony to our schools and communities.

Posters of the Golden Rule were appreciatively received along with “business cards” with website and contact information and The Golden Rule Project booklets containing suggestions for a school curriculum.

While parents carefully rolled posters, vowing to frame them and place them in their kitchen to discuss with their children, teachers expressed a much-needed dialog and a more unifying approach with students regarding “bullying” and mutual respect.

The combined venture of the Golden Rule Art Tent and the adjoining Golden Rule Café provided a “nourishing” venue for warm exchange and engaging dialog with locals and visitors alike as we reflected on the collective wisdom contained in the many formulations of the Golden Rule.

Once more, Sandy Gagon's current art class at Salt Lake Community College illuminated our Golden Rule Broadsides. As a result, we received 13 illuminated broadsides reflecting each student's unique perspective and vision regarding the Golden Rule. We are in the process of matting and framing these broadsides. Upon completion, they will be donated to organizations stipulated by the students. To view their work click here.

We've begun distribution of the Golden Rule Broadsides for the elementary schools. Thus far, we have received approval for distribution to the schools in the Salt Lake City School District, the Nebo School District and the Jordan School District. This amounts to approximately 113 schools . We antcipate this number to grow soon as we work with the other school districts. As some of the illuminations are completed, we will be sure to post examples here.

Golden Rule books made during Mary Wells’ Artist-in-Residency at Rose Park Elementary are currently on display at the Salt Lake City School District Office (bulletin board #8 on the stairs to the 2nd floor). They will be up for the summer.
These are accordion style books that feature the students’ calligraphy and work with illuminated text. The students selected Golden Rules from around the world to write in their books. In some cases, the students wrote their own fundamental rule to live by. Anneliese Cannon's 5th grade students greatly enjoyed working with Ms. Wells and are proud to showcase their work at the district office, even though it means that they won’t get to take their books home for the summer.

In 2005, the Utah Arts Council's Arts Education Program (UAC/AE) and the Utah State Office of Education sponsored a statewide arts education conference using the Golden Rule as its theme. We wish to sincerely thank Jean Okuda Irwin, Arts Education Manager of UAC/AE, for advocating the Golden Rule and for her role in promoting arts education in the state of Utah. Jean provided us a copy of an article she wrote that appeared in the March/April issue of Family Voice magazine highlighting some of the results of the conference.

In conjunction with the theme of the conference referenced above, the Utah Arts Council commissioned Ruby Chacon to paint a mural highlighting the Golden Rule. This mural is along side a previous mural Ruby had painted on the side of a building in a local community on the north side of
Salt Lake City (600 West 500 North).

In Memory of Madelyn Maberly Player

The Golden Rule Project recently lost a good friend and supporter, Madleyn Maberly Player. She learned the values of the Golden Rule from her father, who always carried with him a marble with the Golden Rule emblazoned upon it. This marble was brought out often as Madelyn's father encountered opportunities to share this important principal. A small card was produced to commemorate Madelyn further testifying to the impact the Golden Rule had upon her life. It is included below.
